One of our fabulous Bulldog students, Gertie, has her very own web-based doggie bakery!  The Small Adult Friday class got to take home samples of her wares about a month ago, and now.....her delicious cookies will be available for purchase at DWD!  Gertie and her family lost their home just before Thanksgiving.  You may have read in the newspaper about the fire at Binga's Wingas on Congress Street in the West End.  Well, Gertie's folks own the apartment building next door and the building was pretty much a total loss.  Please help Gertie get back on her paws by buying some biscuits for your pup's holiday stocking!

DWD customers can now enjoy a daily slide show featuring photos from the current day's romp in the playground!  In our customer mailroom, you can now check out photos of the pups, updated daily, on our new digital photo frame!

Success Stories

Do you have a success story about Dances With Dogs?

to the pack leader and your story will be posted on our website!

from Tonya, owner of Roxy Boxer:
Hi Julie,
That picture of Bently and Roxy is so darn cute!  It's not her best angle (saggy eyes and all), but hey she was caught off guard with the kiss from her playmate. Your commentaries are absolutely hysterical! Occasionally, I have to forward them to my closest friends for a little chuckle. Sounds like Roxy certainly likes the boys...I'm glad that she's becoming more trusting and submissive.
I've been meaning to thank you for the Halloween gift bag. The carrot cake dessert smelled really yummy and Roxy certainly enjoyed that and the treats as well. I've been meaning to take some pics of her in the bandana for you...tried one day, but she wasn't into it.
Thanks again Julie! Your school has made a difference in Roxy's development...you (and the other pups) offer something that I couldn't have given her on my own regardless of how many training classes, play groups or beach romps I take her on.
Tonya
Ps. she's been snoozing every since she got home...I love Tuesday nights!

from Laura & Darrell, owners of Bailey Golden Doodle:
We can't thank you enough, Julie, for all you have done for Bailey.  He has enjoyed every minute at your school.  We are so happy to have been part of your school - you have a GREAT program!  We don't want to leave but know we have to (due to Bailey's size).  I can see why you have such a waiting list.  You are at the TOP!  Bailey has made many friends and he is such a happy dog.  We owe you so much!  Your reports at the end of the day are a joy to read.  I don't see how you do it all.  We will truly miss coming to your home.  Please let us know if something new develops for the OLDER dog!  We will never forget the great experience Bailey had at your Dances With Dogs!  Thank you so much!

from Laura & Chris, owners of Bailey, a rescued Terrier-Chihuahua-Mystery Mix:
Adopting Bailey has been one of the most exciting and challenging things that we have ever done. It can be overwhelming at some points, unsure if we’re doing the right thing, trying to teach her how to be a good puppy, and giving her everything she needs to become healthy and happy. We did all the research online and knew one thing—puppies need socialization! Knowing that information, coupled with the fact that we both work, we knew we wanted day care for our dog at least once a week. We began to search around for dog sitters and day care. I was really unhappy with the prospects of dog sitters, and day cares seemed a bit overcrowded and impersonal. We found Julie and Dances with Dogs and it by far has been one of the best things we have done since getting Bailey. We instantly felt so comfortable with Julie; she answered all our questions and gave us tips and insight into raising a well rounded puppy. She pointed out Bailey’s positive behaviors and made us feel like such good parents (even though the credit goes to Bailey there)! As a mostly organic and red meat free household Julie was so understanding and accommodating, telling us all about the organic food that she feeds the puppies, showing us the meat free nylabones, and giving us tips on meat free treats such as frozen peanut butter in kongs! She has connected us with the play group she runs on Sundays, which is now something we look forward to every week, and connected us with Elsa, an amazing trainer and resource. We visited other play groups, and day cares, and we both agreed—they simply don’t come close to Dances With Dogs or Julie and we really don’t feel comfortable to trust Bailey’s development to anyone else. Bailey is thriving, even after only a few classes, and last time she came home from class she was so tired she slept through the night for the first time, yay! Thank you so much Julie, for providing a unique, fun, and safe place for our little girl, and for being a trusted resource for us. Oh, and Bailey loves you completely (as evidenced from her wiggling little body every time we get remotely near your house)!

From Emily & Casey, owners of Layla (Rescued Whippet Mix)
Thank you so much for taking in our little puppy and helping to mold her into the wonderful young dog she is today.  Remember how shy she was when she began?  You've been such a great friend and resource.  It felt great dropping Layla off at "school" knowing she would have a fun-filled day with you.  I'm very sad she had to grow up so quickly.  I'm so thankful for the day I saw your brochure at the Vet's.  I will be sure to spread the word of Julie and Dances With Dogs.  Every puppy and their owner should get the chance to be a part of something so wonderful.  Layla will start attending Adventure Walks and we have a few private lessons scheduled with Elsa.  Your great facility truly spoiled us, so we haven't been able to commit to any dog daycares.  They lack the cleanliness, character and "Julie" that we've all grown accustomed to.  We'll miss you so much!

From Kate, owner of Lucy (Maltepoo)

OK, I don't know what you did to Lucy yesterday but she is a new dog! She has a new calmness to her that I have never seen. Last night when we got home she took a little nap but then throughout the rest of the night she still remained calm. She would sit before I put food down for her, sit before we went outside. My husband asked, can't we take her every day of the week? I thought when she got up this morning she would be full of energy, which she was, but so much less jumpy then she was.  I was a little nervous to drop our baby off but the updates on the website and your confidence really helped put me at ease. Thank you so much! I can't believe all of these changes in just one day at DWD! I wish that we had found you sooner but am so glad that we found you now. You are doing an amazing thing!  Thank you so much!

From Lisa & Michelle, owners of Oliver Ramone (Sheltie Mix Rescue...)
Oliver Ramone, a Sheltie mix adopted from the Greater Androscoggin Human Society, has been attending Julie's play groups since he was 8 weeks old. He went twice a week to her puppy group and then was "graduated" to the small adult Monday class (thank goodness he's remained small enough to stay with Dances with Dogs! at 11 months old he's still only 28 or so pounds...phew).  He adores Julie and has so much fun at DWD. His over-sized ears perk straight up as we head over the bridge to South Portland and once we round the corner by the pizza place onto Ocean Street, he starts wiggling his butt. By the time I pull into the DWD driveway, he's squealing with excitement and wriggling his entire body so much so that it's difficult to extricate him from his seat belt....Once I get him unleashed and into the yard he runs full speed ahead towards the gate and all his little pup friends and Julie, never once looking back at me....It's not just fun and puppy games, though. We are quite sure that had Oliver Ramone not attended Julie's since he was small, he would be a bit of a "challenging" dog. Julie helped us reduce his Sheltie-tendency to alert bark at everything from a leave falling from a tree to the kids playing next door. She also worked to curb his potential for fear-based aggressive tendencies. When he was a small puppy he exhibited signs of being a bit of a bully....but not any more! Now he is the star of every playgroup we've ever brought him too. He adjusts easily to new dogs, people and situations. He is "wicked" smart about how to approach new dogs and gives lots of wiggle-butt kisses to dogs that are scared or too hyper for him (as opposed to growling and dominating). The only thing we are working on nowadays is his obsessive excitement/fear of cats (whenever he sees a cat he makes a very strange, almost melodic whine/howl/purr. We can't tell if he's ready to attack or if he's in love...) and his tendency to fear-bark at inanimate objects (e.g., trash cans, tables on the sidewalk on "big trash" day, trees...). We worry that he is not too bright since he tends to bark at things that he's passed by many (many) times before. Either that or he sees things that only he can see...anyway, after a long day of romping around with Julie and his puppy friends, he's a happy worn out limp noodle of a love pup. We will take him to DWD for as long as Julie will have him. We HIGHLY recommend Dances with Dogs!

From Jennie, owner of Henry (Choc Lab)
We started communicating with Julie before we even brought our chocolate lab puppy home, and right from the first conversation Julie was helpful and friendly. She is a fount of information about everything; she is eager to listen and give advice regarding training and anything else we asked her about. She has made Henry’s first two months at home a true joy for owners and puppy. She has a gift for making dogs and people comfortable around her. Henry has learned so much from being in the pack and is always tired for at least two days after! We will really miss our Tuesdays and Thursdays with Julie and highly recommend her to everyone!

From Sarah, owner of Lola (Maltese)
It's such a treat to watch you & your "gang" from the doorway, if only for the few moments that I am there!! I'd love to watch hours of the antics of the "gang"!!  I had doubts about having a dog in a 3-story condo, in the city, with no direct access to a yard.  So, it just warms my heart & brings a smile to my face to see what originally looked like a little fluff ball strutting around with the big boys and girls!  I love that she looks so strong and self-assured and at home without me and with her playmates.  I'm so glad we found you & your wonderful work.

From Helen & Roland, owners of Tootsie (Mini Dachshund)
We cannot thank you enough for all the good care you have given Tootsie.  Tootsie always looked forward to going to your place.  We feel that that part of her life has given her so much pleasure.  Your "puppy reports" have been very funny, interesting and educational for us.  We feel that because of your puppy day care, Tootsie has had a wonderful and enjoyable start in her puppy-stage of life.  And from you, we have learned to train her in a loving, caring way.  We wish you the best and will highly recommend your business to whomever we meet who has a puppy or small dog.

From Justin & Rickie, owners of Lola (rescued Lab mix)
Like many people, we adopted a puppy without a clear understanding of how to train and raise her! Lola came to us on a truck from Tennessee one rainy Saturday morning in November 2007. She was 9 weeks old and the most adorable black lab mix with four white paws and a little white painted on the tip of her tail! She was adorable, so much fun and not too difficult as far as puppies go, but we were still unsure of how to properly train her. We first met Julie when we checked out her play group at Planet Dog. Unsure of how else to socialize our pup we showed up on a weekend morning and from the second I met her, I knew we had found someone special! Neither of us had any experience with dogs and we had as much fun going to Romp rrrr Room as Lola did! Not only was Julie excellent at facilitating the crazy pups at her feet but she would simultaneously point out the puppies behaviors to help us humans understand what was healthy puppy play, and what was a something to watch out for. I have never seen someone multitask so well in between cleaning up accidents, passing off pups for potty breaks and teaching the owners about their dogs at the same time! Julie has such great energy that it was easy to decide Lola needed to attend her school. Dances with Dogs has been such a blessing for us and Lola! Lola was able to get exercise, experience socializing with other pups, basic behavior training, and play time that our busy schedules don’t allow. She knew exactly where we were going every morning and couldn’t wait to get inside that backyard gate! Julie’s space is wonderful and it was clear that Lola couldn’t get enough. The environment feels warm, open and loving for people and pups, which sets her apart from other day cares that we visited. She gives amazing individual attention and clearly loves her job, the pups she cares for and the humans that come with them! For us, we knew that Lola was in good care, loved her days at Dances with Dogs and we were able to pick up tips and information about how to best raise our new pup. I cannot rave enough about our experiences. Without Julie and Dances with Dogs Lola wouldn’t be the well rounded young adult that she is today. The only down side is when graduation day comes! Thank you Julie for all your love and care!

From Kathy, owner of Murphy (golden retriever)
As a retiree, I was thrilled to finally have the time to raise a puppy – and I thought I knew how to go about it.  I wanted a golden retriever and was well aware of how high-energy they can be, having owned a golden for ten years previously. So I picked out a beautiful male puppy from a reputable breeder and brought him home.  He was adorable to look at – but behind that angel facade was a wild and wooly mouthy puppy with razor sharp teeth.  He was unfocused and “all over the place”.I thought he was getting socialized – I introduced him to the mailman, the neighbors etc. – but it wasn’t nearly enough.  Finding Dances with Dogs was a lifesaver.  I was astonished to find that he didn’t know how to play with other puppies – the puppy that I thought was full of confidence just didn’t know how to interact (even though he had left his active littermates only two weeks before.)  I don’t know if we humans will ever fully understand puppy brain development – but Murphy’s interaction with other puppies during this critical time made all the difference.  They taught him how to play, when a nip was too hard, and when enough is enough.  But the real credit goes to Julie who provides a very safe, play-friendly environment with supervision at all times.  She is extremely good at understanding dog behavior and very good at understanding how sensitive owners can be about their little darlings.  Murphy has graduated from puppy playschool – but he owes a huge debt of gratitude to Julie and Dances with Dogs for molding him into the very likable nice dog that he has become. Thank you Julie.

From Lydia S., owner of Kazuo:
On December 30, 2007, I brought home a Shiba-inu and named him Kazuo,
meaning peaceful one in Japanese (a hope for the future!). As someone
who brought home a Shiba from Japan in 1985 and was lucky to get to love
him for 15 years, I knew some of the possible issues that could come up.
Shibas are rather cat-like and can end up becoming dog aggressive and
they happy to ignore people because they are really loners by nature.
Knowing this and not wanting to have to cross the street when other dogs
appeared, I immediately sought out ways to socialize him – not easy in
Maine in January! Lucky for me, I found Julie and Dances with Dogs.

Dances with Dogs has been a marvelous experience for both me and Kazuo
and we have had fantastic results. Julie has provided a wonderful place
for Kazuo to play and socialize and also provided me with lots of
information, tips, and connections to other resources. Kazuo has gone
from being a shy pup hiding behind pillows to a puppy who is happy to
see other dogs when we are out walking and meets them with a happy tail.
He has learned how to be part of a pack of pups and play with great
delight. He has also learned to approach and greet people with good
manners and he has been exposed to lots of people as other owners are in
and out as well as trainers and others that Julie brings in for visits.

When I say, “Let’s go see Julie!” Kazuo cannot wait to hop in the car.
When I drop him off, he doesn’t even look back as he is so happy to see
Julie and the other pups. The pups are never crated and spend most of
their time outside (even in snow and rain!) and Julie is always with
them. While Kazuo and I work on our relationship and behaviors daily
and take training classes, the experiences, socialization, and training
he receives at Dances with Dogs makes it a joy to be out and about in
Portland with Kazuo and he is welcome everywhere I take him. I am
deeply appreciative of Julie’s skills and dedication to the pups and
their owners.
